Being able to draw on a decade of broadcasting experience from some of the West Midlands biggest media groups to a worldwide institution such as the BBC has given me a fantastic range of skills that I’m able to apply across a variety of subjects
My Story
I have spent the last 10 years of my career working in broadcasting. Chiefly radio; most recently at the BBC and with Free Radio before that. However I have spent many years in marketing, writing and have excellent customer service skills.
Housing & Birmingham City Council
My customer service role with Birmingham City Council in their Rents and Benefits department and more recently in property lettings at a local estate agent have given me much experience in ensuring successful outcomes for the customer. I pride myself on listening to clients, hearing their story, and finding positive ways forward even in the most challenging of situations.
West Bromwich Albion
My first job on graduating from Keele University was with West Bromwich Albion as match day press assistant. A great job for a Baggies supporter! This Premier League PR department offered great insight into how the media operates when under constant scrutiny in high-pressure environments. I liaised with press, coordinated press releases, and ensured the smooth running of the media department on match days before moving to Free Radio where I managed all output for Coventry City Football Club.
Free Radio
At Free Radio I had responsibility for all output of the ‘Free Radio 80’s’ station. This involved resolving any problems quickly and effectively to ensure the station ran perfectly. I had a key marketing role and was responsible for creating advertisements for upcoming events, programmes, trailers for internal use and the station’s own specific marketing campaigns including the hugely successful, award winning ‘Free Radio Phantom’ campaign; one of the largest the station had ever undertaken.
Broadcasting
I was keen to broaden my experience and was delighted to be given responsibility for Free Radio 80’s, a popular local station with a focus on classic 80’s hits and a peak listenership of 150,000. I was responsible for producing and maintaining all pre-recorded output for the station. Broadcasting can be fraught with problems, and I quickly learnt how to avoid the most common pitfalls and to assess and resolve any technical issues to ensure a seamless output of continuous quality for the listener whatever the time of day. Quick thinking and the ability to make decisions using my own initiative were key. Resolving problems and unsociable hours were all part of my job to avoid any breaks in continuity or worse, dead air!
Radio Marketing
I spent much of my time working alongside Free Radio’s marketing department and Orion Media as a whole. This award-winning team produced some of the most respected local and national campaigns. I gained experience in creating and developing both small, self-promotion projects to large-scale marketing campaigns. One such example is my involvement with one of their largest ever promotions, the ‘Free Radio Phantom’. From inception to fruition, I assisted in the evolution of the campaign and was able to ensure the smooth running of the competition over a 3-year period.
BBC
Not long after the final instalment of the ‘Free Radio Phantom’ I made the short trip from Broad Street to the Mailbox and began working in a similar role with the BBC, once again largely focusing on sports broadcasts. The BBC operated with a much larger, 24-hour dedicated team, and this allowed me to really focus my skills into the editing and production of live broadcasts.
Responsibilities
My responsibilities at the BBC include writing news scripts and post-match reports for BBC WM, creating sports highlights packages, editing live shows and sports clips, desk driving, updating social media channels, liaising with presenters, guests, and the general public.
Writing
Alongside this I developed my scripting and writing; something I particularly enjoyed and used my skills and knowledge to create post-match reports and news bulletins. I quickly became the ‘go to’ person for a variety of sports news bulletins for the following morning’s news broadcasts. It was from this that I decided to focus on the writing aspect of my career and through an existing passion and professional encouragement I’ve been able to write pieces and articles for a number of publications with subjects ranging from cars, wildlife conservation to video games.
Skills & Experience
Thanks to my background in broadcasting, I’m confident in researching and writing any subject requested of me and able to get the exposure required through my skills and experience in SEO. I am passionate and ambitious and ready to utilise this in a dedicated role.
